About Dubai Metro

Dubai Metro was launched as planned on Wednesday night, marking a historical day for the city. The opening of the 52km Dubai Metro Red Line, which was broadcast live on television, began with a reception attended by hundreds at the Mall of the Emirates Galleria. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai punched in the first ticket exactly at 9pm, 9 minutes and 9 seconds, marking the official inauguration of the first metro system in the Gulf region.

Sheikh Mohammed along with VIPs and members of the media boarded the train which left the station at 9.11pm. The Metro project has gone through a massive 50%-55% changes in terms of its design and new stations and facilities since its inception to cope with the growing needs of the city.

The fully air-conditioned depot, located near the Etisalat Metro station on the Green Line, houses a stabling shed, a light repair workshop and a heavy repair workshop as well as washing facilities and testing tracks. The depot has the capacity to accommodate 48 trains at any given time. All trains undergo routine inspection and servicing once every three days, monthly, quarterly, biannually and annually. However, major overhauling is done only after a train clocks 600,000 kilometres.

Each train undergoes five levels of maintenance. The first four levels fall under routine periodic maintenance and are carried out at the Light Repair Workshops set up at all three depots of Dubai Metro. Each Depot has a control center to operate train and station systems and to check individual on board train systems, along with the safety of the stations systems such as air-conditioning, security, safety, sound system, and the sophisticated electronic subsystems. It also includes workshops to carry out maintenance works and other workshops for washing and cleaning of trains. Al Rashidiya Depot has air-conditioned parking space accommodating 64 trains.

Al Rashidiya site was selected for several reasons, including that it is situated at the terminal point of the metro track, the strategic location at the Emirates Road, vicinity of the Green Line and the sole location free from barriers in the neighbourhood. The Jebel Ali Depot covers an area of 110,000 square meters. It includes an air-conditioned parking for train carriages and is equipped with an advanced fire-fighting system. It has a capacity to house 40 trains.
